Not long after having Jack, John left the van der Linde in a moment of selfishness and self-reflection. Not much is known about his time away from the family, but one thing is for sure - Arthur was not happy about it. It's pretty clear that Arthur was quite hurt by John's selfish action, as he brings it up about five thousand times in the early part of the game.
