Triangle Strategy takes place in Norzelia, a mystical land full of various people from all walks of life. The land is primarily made up of three kingdoms, each with its own culture and identity. Upon release, players will find themselves traveling between the Kingdom of Glenbrook, Grand Duchy of Aesfrost, and the Holy State of Hyza

While I can’t delve too deeply into the narrative as part of this preview, I can say that Triangle Strategy does an excellent job of introducing its cast of characters while making them matter. Serenoa is far too young for the post he’s been appointed but will do anything for his people, while Frederica is walking into a relationship amidst a nation who views her people with a level of racial hate that is often vitriolic. Other characters like Roland also shine, a prince who resents the people dying in the face of his own protection. The crown weighs heavy, and the game isn’t afraid to force difficult decisions upon you. You will learn to love all of these people, even if the English voice acting has a habit of veering into pantomime territory. Serenoa is particularly awful, to the point where I found myself guffawing at the screen as lines were delivered with the enthusiasm of a plasticine potato.

After being both impressed yet underwhelmed by the ambition of Octopath Traveller, Triangle Strategy feels like a more focused outing that knows exactly what it can do well and builds upon it in countless ways. The characters are great, the combat is satisfying, and the world building thus far is absolutely stellar. If the full game continues to build upon this brilliance we could be looking at one of the year’s most unexpected surprises.

Triangle Strategy made me feel like an awful person. Many games make a huge deal about the impact your decisions will have on characters and the unfolding narrative, but here the input actually feels substantial. People died due to my actions, while allegiances across a global conflict shifted and changed depending on what I believed was right. It gives this gorgeous pixel-art TRPG a level of dramatic investment I never could have expected, and for that it shines. The name is still very silly though.

The most popular strategy games offer players enough of a challenge that it feels like there are actual high stakes and carefully considered tactics that need to be employed, while still making gameplay accessible. The XCOM series usually handles this balance well, with straightforward mechanics that still need careful thought and planning. Running a base requires a strategy, and the scarcity of resources has a big impact. Making mistakes during missions can lead to the permanent deaths of squad members, and can feel emotionally resonant as well as strategically important. Decisions have consequences, and gamers can't just breeze through the game without taking a more measured appro

Spawning multiple books, comics, board games, card games, spin-offs, TV series, and core films, the Star Wars franchise is a cultural behemoth. The globally beloved series already has a number of excellent games under its belt, like the singleplayer Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the gold standard of MMORPGs Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic . However, fans of the franchise were surprised by the announcement that came earlier this year of three new titles, as EA teams up with Respawn Entertainment to make new Star Wars projects. These three new titles will be the eagerly anticipated Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2, an FPS, and a strategy g

Each character possesses certain skills, like a second action movement, better speed, or a mount. When characters attack an enemy and have a friendly team member on the opposite side of their target, the team member is given an action of opportunity, encouraging players to strategically place their units for optimal damage. Characters can also use the terrain of the battle map for advantage, with the high ground boosting certain attacks of either the player's units or the opposing force's fighters. While the combat in Triangle Strategy can feel like an engaging game of chess, there is also limited opportunity to practice early in the game, which may be frustrating for those who prefer a more fast-paced RPG experie

While it may be hard to differentiate Triangle Strategy from its peers based on combat alone, its focus on decision-making will make it a radical departure from those that came before it.
