The game’s defining feature, however, is its brutal difficulty; whether choosing Fortress Mode or Adventure Mode, the player will eventually succumb to the goblin hordes, leaving their fortress in tatt

The nominations are in and the finalists have been officially selected for the 2013 Canadian Videogame Awards. This year, the fifth for the relatively young award ceremony, is quite a bit different. Reboot Communications and EP Media are moving the show this year from Vancouver FanExpo, where it's traditionally been held, to Toronto but recently delayed the production to the fall where the 2013 awards will be announced alongside (but separately from) the 2014 awards as w

The 2014 show will include 2013 and 2014 made games to be awarded separately, based on the nomination year, in one ceremony. Information on 2014 nominations will be released in June while the votes for the 2013 winners must be submitted by April 21st. The award ceremony takes place November 21, 2014 at the Carlu in the heart of downtown Toro

The main issue many might have with Don't Starve it that you need to make your own goals. There's no "go here do this" to the game, nothing pointing you in the right direction. You get resources by harvesting them from the world, craft them into items, use them to harvest more resources that then get turned into new items to help you live longer. You need to keep on top of health, hunger, and sanity, and there's no instructions on how to do this outside of the obvious "eat food" and "don't get hit". Everything else is trial and error or a quick trip to an FAQ.

Players should not get too attached to the characters on show, however. Death in Fire Emblem is a huge ordeal to overcome, as the defeat of a character means that they will not return for any future battles – a particularly terrifying prospect when a gamer has spent untold hours training them up. Although some games in the series have offered a more lenient approach to character death, the threat of a mortality is still a very present dan

Wilba – She's Pig Royalty. Steal whatever you like with no repercussions; no one is going to arrest a member of the Royal Family. Other Pigs will even occasionally gift her with resources. But stay clear of the dark; Wilba isn't a

A quick stroll north, carefully circumventing the robots patrolling an area I don't have weapons strong enough to survive venturing into yet, and I find the skeletal corpse of an adventurer who died with his boomerang, which is not only a very helpful item but also frees up the resources I'd already gathered for other things. I've never gotten to use a boomerang before, though, so the first thing to do is find something to chuck it at. Tossing it at a crow nets a black feather, useful in a crafting recipe for... something. I'll look it up when I get back to camp. Unfortunately it also comes back and smacks me in the face, knocking my health down to just above nothing. That didn't go well but practice makes perfect, and it seems like a nicely powerful weapon so obviously the smart thing to do is use it again as quickly as possible. Turns out practice makes dead, and I'm all out of sacrificial altars for revival. The unforgiving lands of Don't Starve have killed me again, but next time will go better. Probably.

After six games released over the course of seven years, the series then went on hiatus until 2012's X-COM: Enemy Unknown . The reboot of the franchise proved to be successful, with Firaxis and publisher 2K Games choosing to commit to further games in the X-COM franchise. Fans do not have long to wait for X-COM 2 - although the title has recently been pushed back to a February 2016 relea

And then you get cocky and decide to attack the wrong monster. Or an unexpected swarm of bats invades the camp, or a surprise tentacle in the swamp, or maybe you weren't quite so prepared for winter as you thought you were. Death isn't truly inevitable, but it's going to take a whole lot of dying to learn how not to do it any more. Then it's time to choose who you want to play as this time, roll up a new world, and start all over again with, hopefully, a better plan.

Reus has players take charge of four huge elemental avatars, allowing you to terraform an earth and maximize its output to please the population. This is a god game that isn't about imbuing the player with all the power of an omnipotent being. This is a game about how futile that power is in the face of human gr

Proteus came out way back in January and thus, has probably been forgotten by some as one of the best experiential games of the year. This SLG Game tips is the most, for want of a better word, 'arty' on this list and it's another example of a game that has come under fire for 'not being a game'. But if you can open your mind enough, Proteus is one of the best audio/visual experiments we've seen in a long t
