Never mind sleeping pills, earplugs or plumped-up pillows. The real secret to a good night's sleep could be a banana milkshake at bedtime, according to a study.
Researchers found that those struggling to nod off got to sleep faster and slept for longer if they treated themselves to the two foodstuffs last thing at night.
Eating a banana slashed the time it took for insomniacs to drift off, from an average of two hours to 36 minutes. 
It also helped them stay asleep for nearly an hour longer than usual.
A milky drink, meanwhile, reduced the time volunteers lay awake, from more than two hours to just over one.

Sleep length among milk drinkers also increased.
One in three adults in the UK suffers with insomnia. The UK economy is thought to lose around £34billion a year because of the effects of chronic insomnia.

The research, published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, followed 21 insomniacs as just over half tucked into a whole banana and a small cup of milk every night for six weeks, and half tried to get to sleep as usual.
Scientists said they think the secret is that both bananas and milk are rich sources of tryptophan - a chemical that's vital for numerous bodily functions, including sleep.
Once tryptophan is in the body it gets turned into a sleep-promoting hormone called melatonin.
In a report on the findings, researchers from the University of Health Sciences in Istanbul, Turkey, said: 'Foods high in tryptophan - such as <a href="https://janestrinketonline.com/collections/children-ebooks">bananas</a>; and milk - may improve sleep disorders when consumed at bedtime.
'Both of them are known to have sleep-inducing effects.'
