We've recommended it for about four years, unique cup and saucer sets and we’ve yet to have a serious (get it?) complaint with it. It’s quick to heat, comes in a compact package, pulls great espresso shots, and has an automatic steam wand that creates microfoam silky enough for latte art. Some machines, such as the Sage Bambino Plus, provide a bare minimum of assistance and leave the grinding, tamping and brewing entirely to you (and you’ll need to buy your own grinder, too). Press a button, however, and they’ll automatically steam a jug of milk to a hot, creamy froth. Unlike the Sage or Ninja machines, there’s no sensor to detect the correct amount of ground coffee, so you manually have to grind, check the tamp height, grind again, trim, tamp and repeat the process when you change beans.
Elizabeth is very energy efficient when left on constantly, using only around fifty Watts per hour with the steam boiler off, or seventy with both boilers on (probably something like 20-50p per day), while the DB heats up so fast it's probably more cost effective to leave it off. It's a very solidly built machine, from one of the most trusted commercial espresso machine brands, and it's not only more modern looking than most other E61 group machines on the market, but some of the features are far more 21st century too including the fact that it has app connectivity. Overall though, I've found this to be a very nice machine to use, I've had some great espresso from it paired with various grinders, and I've made some stonking milkies with it too. The grinder is the most important part of the setup, you should really be focussing most of your budget there, and seeing the espresso machine as the afterthought, not the other way around.
By the way, don't listen to the chatter you'll read about Sage machines being consumer unique cup and saucer sets machines and parts not being available etc., there's an element of truth in this but it's not quite accurate. There's also been some talk about bubbling on the group, a material on the surface of the Aluminium group that bubbles over time and looks weird. From what I understand, this is just cosmetic, it doesn't look great, but it's usually hidden inside the machine so it doesn't really matter what it looks like. I could talk about this machine all day, and 99.9% of what I'd be saying would be positive. Steaming is really good, not mega powerful but powerful enough, and nice & easy to learn to texture milk with, too.
The barista guidance doesn’t adapt as readily as the cheaper Ninja; I’m hoping firmware updates over the wifi connection will improve things. Given the potential of the machine, I often found myself fine-tuning manually – it’s nice to have the option, but arguably defeats the point somewhat. It’s a shame that … at this price, the Bambino Plus isn’t much cheaper than models with adjustable brew temperature, such as the Lelit Anna PL41TEM, that give you more versatility when it comes to light or dark roasts.

If your coffees are not up to scratch it’s probably not the machine, it’s not you, and it’s DEFINITELY not your expertly roasted Steampunk coffee beans, it’s just… hard!! The importance of a consistent grind, ground fresh just before a shot pull cannot be overstated. If you want the richest, most complete shot possible, you must fresh grind in a quality grinder. You might even want to consider spending more money on the coffee grinder, and less on the espresso machine. Between the two appliances, the grinder is definitely the star of the show when it comes to what lands in the espresso cup.
Finally, both the glazing and firing produces a super-white, hard wearing, finish. And we have words and/or phrases to cover almost every occasion. Add a pop of colour and timeless style to your shot of caffeine with this set of 4 Keith Brymer Jones espresso cups.
