As a turn-based RPG, one of the most important aspects of the game for new players to grasp is how to build effective teams comps in Honkai: Star Rail , for which there are several factors to consider. Elemental coverage, for example, is vitally important, as exploiting the elemental weaknesses of enemies forms the crux of Star Rail 's combat. Equally important to consider are the character's Paths - essentially, their character classes, which determine their roles in battle, from damage dealing, to buffing/debuffing, to shielding/healing. Luckily, Honkai: Star Rail 's free characters have enough variety in elements and Paths for players to build effective teams without pulling other characters - but some are certainly more effective than oth

Similar to Herta, Qinque is an Erudition character using the Quantum element, and can be claimed for free after clearing Memory Stage 3 in the Forgotten Hall - meaning that she won't be available for players through most of the currently available story unless pulled. While her Quantum element gives her a solid niche among Star Rail 's free characters, most of her tools revolve around a heavily chance-based mini-game, making her inconsistent in combat, and, like Herta, lacking in comparison to other damage dealers, especially with a slow-to-charge ultimate and the skill point hungry nature of her tile matching mini-g

As the final free Erudition character, Serval's Lightning element and potent attacking skills manage to set her apart as a good general option - which is especially good because she can be claimed for free early in the game as part of Star Rail 's pre-registration campaign. Being the only Lightning attacker out of the free characters already gives Serval a solid niche, but her skills also leave potent lightning DoTs on enemies that are effective at racking up residual damage, further supported by her ultimate and basic attacks. As a slight downside, however, her skill can only target three enemies, meaning her damage can suffer in fights with larger gro

A good Light Cone is very valuable for Seele, but her Relic build is paramount. This is especially true because therein lies the stat distribution, and, unlike a few characters, she relies heavily on those boosts. The best Honkai: Star Rail Relic set for Seele’s build is Musketeer of Wild Wheat . At two pieces, it increases ATK by 10%, but at four pieces, it sees the user’s Speed boosted by 6% , and their Basic Attack DMG increased by 10% . This goes along well with Seele’s signature In The Night Light Cone, which rewards high Speed with more damage out

Himeko shouldn’t be using her Basic Attack as often as her other skills, so that should be the last thing players consider when building her. She is an Erudition Path character and her focus is hitting multiple targets at once, so boosting her one ability that is not focused on multi-targets goes in the opposite direction of her original purp

Players can also use the Genius of Brilliant Stars Relic set for Seele’s best build. While it does not build on top of her Speed stat, it does boost The Hunt’s powers. With two pieces, her Quantum DMG is increased by 10%. Four pieces see that she ignores 25% of the DEF stat when attacking weak enemies against Quan

Before Dawn increases Crit DMG by up to 64% alongside Skill DMG and Ultimate DMG by up to 40%, Jing Yuan relies on the constant use of his Skill and Ultimate to increase Lightning-Lord's DMG. This Light Cone is perfect after a Skill or Ultimate; the wearer gets Somnus Corpus. This condition increases the next follow-up attack DMG by up to 96%. Since Lightning-Lord's attacks are always considered follow-up attacks, this makes the summoned avatar incredibly power

Serving as one of the game's starting characters, Dan Heng is surprisingly capable when it comes to his role as a single-target damage dealer, with his Wind element and Hunt Path targeting a common early-game weakness and allowing him to easily break enemies. Complementing his damage dealing prowess, Dan Heng's talent gives him a hefty Wind resistance penetration buff after he's targeted by any ally's ability, boosting his already-impressive damage even further and giving him an easily usable synergy with many Harmony and Preservation characters - including fellow starter character March

Bailu, easily one of the best 5-star characters in Honkai Star Rail 3.1 update: Star Rail , follows The Abundance Path and is one out of three heroes that follow this Path. While it does nothing for Jing Yuan himself, the Light Cone's passive can still boost Lightning-Lord's attacks.
